So most black cab drivers show less than what they earn in order to avoid paying more income tax and v.a.t. Their salaries obviously depend on the amount of time they spend behind the wheel driving around and they don't always take every customer they see. They also often cruise around without their lights on inorder to refuse any customers. Most black cab drivers in London do live in rather nice houses. Tax officials have very little to do. They often look at their mileage but that can easily rebutted by saying they also use it for private use. As you can see, black cab drivers in London do earn a lot and pay a similar amount of tax to someone trying to make ends meet. Unfortunately this is not unique to black cab drivers. A lot of people in UK who own their businesses evade tax. That is not to be confused with avoiding tax. The former is a criminal offence and punishable by law, the latter is completely legal. So most London black-cab drivers earn in excess of £50k-£60k a year.

Why are you so annoyed about this!! when there are so many problems in this world death, suffering,the poor elderly, etc the list goes on. unless you put a tax man in every cab, or every self employed persons business what can you do? personally the tax in this country is disgusting that's why many people are going abroad, good nurses etc my self and family pays far to much tax. THAT'S MY RANT OVER! now i will get off my soap box, ( are you off yours yet)lol

London Taxi Drivers are the best in the world. They spend at least two or three years riding round London on scooters learning and being tested on 'the knowledge' - at the end they can take you from and to any of I think 30,000 points, buildings around London and know every street and route in every direction for six miles from the centre.



Go to New York and you're lucky if the driver can understand the address, let alone take you there.

(LOL I think some people don't realise that London cabs are black in colour and called Black Cabs and you are not referring to the colour of anyone's skin)

You are right, cab drivers are easy pickings for Inspectors of Taxes - they are usually given to trainees to cut their teeth on. I once investigated one who managed to buy two buy to let properties with his undeclared takings (and he wasn't even in London). His wife claimed to provide food for the lodgers, but an examination of her food purchases showed she was often in two supermarkets at the same time! She was picking up abandoned till receipts which showed things like nappies and dog food when they had neither dogs nor children. I could write a book, but I won't.
