Labour policy on local taxation,

Does anyone or is anyone a member of labour here know about it's policy to change council tax ?

I heard and read from news (not confirmed ) labour wanted to (when in power ) or next time they are , to replace council tax and put in place pure property tax at 1% of your home value , to all homeowners (renters not liable as landlords will pay it)?

And revaluation every 5 or 10 years so anyone improvement you make oh your home will mean more tax !

And there will be no benefit rebate exemption for when you loose your Job loss of income or retired, you would simply have to defer it with interest so when you sell up or die the government (or local council) takes their share !

Currently with council tax pensioners who's cash savings or income is below a certain limit don't pay council tax same as unemployed ,

But with this "property tax" no rebate will be available , so all your hard earned paid of 30years mortgage would go to the state not your loved ones,

Anyway when they were in power they considered it but didn't do it , but is it likely they would do it next time in power ?

It's all nonsense, I certainly have not heard of it.Landlords would never agree to pay council tax on a property they do not live in.

I am a Pensioner and I have to pay it, and I'm not rich, so where did you get that from.

Sounds like you have been reading comics. With policies like that Labour would not stand a hope of ever being in Government.

Only central government can remove the current system, individual council leaders cannot. They just decide how much you pay.

Lots of times they have chatted about replacing council tax with something more fair, so have the lib dems but when they get power they don't do it.

Since they can threaten you with jail for non payment, most people would rather pay to avoid jail, so there aren't that many non payers, so no need for them to bother changing it.

EDIT: Ah, I think you are thinking of council tax benefit, if you have less than 16k savings and a LOW INCOME then you can apply for council tax benefit from the council. Pensioners get this as do people unemployed under the pension age, as do low paid workers. Anyone over 18 can claim council tax benefit, that is what you are thinking of.

Please provide a link to your 'news' because I don't believe a word of it

Landlords or local authorities are never liable for council tax, they own the property but do not live in it

It is the person/people who live in these properties who are liable for council tax

As for becoming unemployed, retired etc, how can they defer payment if someone dies and does have leave a penny ?? That's no way to run a council payment that provides for local people

Pensioners DO pay council tax, however they may get a rebate,

and they may get a discount for single occupancy

Many have state pensions and a works pension

Many unnemployed people also pay council tax if they have savings or their partner works and earns- My husband had to pay when he was made redundant, because I worked and earned

Please get the facts correct
